Technology is expanding its influence in every possible sector of life and transportation is no exception. Technological innovations have changed the face of transportation sector and every year, new transportation technologies evolve by addressing the shortfalls of the previous year technologies .Here are some of the technologies that will undoubtedly take over 2020.

Improvised Unit Load Devices

People have a positive impact on the demand of goods and 2019 has seen an exponential increase in population indicating that the international demand for goods will be high in 2020. Starting from pallets to containers, unit load devices (ULD) play a major role in supplying the demand goods.

Research aiming to improve ULDs has been going on for a while and some were focused on discovering the possibilities of replacing wooden pallets and steel container with carbon fiber or hemp. With the arrival of IoT, ULDs upgraded to the next level.

Next generation ULDs incorporate smart technology and lightweight materials that effectively decreases total weight, improves fuel economy and contributes to utility and security.

In the long run, improved ULD is a cost saving option because of its improved dispatch efficiency, lesser loading and unloading times and lowered weight.

Upgraded Transport Management Systems

Transport management systems have been in use in one or other forms and advanced transport management system (ATMS) is an upgraded version of the transport management systems. ATMS technology offers traffic analysis information and real-time congestion details that offers better accuracy of re-routing procedures.

Real time traffic detection of the ATMS technology reduces the chances of accidents and the total driving time.

Solar Roadways

There is no argument about the suggestion that solar roadways have a long way to go because it is a relatively new transportation technology, but researches might possibly make solar roadway technology a feasible and practical one. The technology evolved by considering the possibility of using roads as a solar surface because they receive a fair amount of sunlight during the day and the road network is quite wide in the majority of countries.

Individual solar panels with three layers are placed on the roads. The top layer is made of textured glass which has high strength because vehicles pass over this layer. An array of solar cells is placed beneath the top layer to gather solar energy and a base plate that serves the purpose of distribution of collected power lies beneath it. The solar panels contain LED lights that too are powered by solar energy and act as inbuilt warning signs on the road. The panels gather heat that aids in melting the snow and ice on roads.

Distribution Ledger Technology (DLT)

Since its invention in 2008, DLT has brought dynamic changes in various industries and has influenced the operations of the transport sector too. Block chain is a DLT technology that offers better payment reliability to transportation companies and helps them connect with the clients easily.

Block chain technology assures the security of uncertain transactions better. Take for instance the case of a small trucking company that got a new client. Using the block chain technology, the dispatcher can check the code in the wireless transfer for payment verification and if the code isn’t secure, the client can be marked scam.

Matching companies with clients was quite difficult earlier because it took long hours to set up the match. Things are now so easy with DLT because all the dispatchers want to do is check up the block chain ledger to find past buyers.

 Predictive Analytics

Predictive analytics uses the data from the previous operations of a transport company to find strategic solutions to present challenges. Combining artificial intelligence with predictive analytics helps to factor in mathematical equations relating to human behavior.

In an attempt to modernize their transportation management systems, land, air and water transport companies are all adopting AI.

Gyroscopic Vehicles

Gyrocars are hovering vehicles that are propelled using monorails and balanced by next-gen gyroscopes. The size is comparable to that of modern buses and trains, and this could be a great step towards solving global public transportation issues.

Hyperloop system was proposed by industrialist Elon Musk and the concept is based on massive tubes inside which pods that carry passengers travel at speeds over 700mph. The pods are propelled forward by means of magnetic accelerators planted along the tube length and the tube is a low-pressure environment. A cushion of air formed due to this low-pressure environment surrounds the pod ensuring the safety of its motion at high speeds.

The major shortfall of conventional transportation methods is the environmental damage that they cause and developing smarter transport solutions that are equally energy efficient and environment friendly is the need of the hour. Technology and transportation have to collaborate to make real world energy efficient solutions plausible.
