What Causes Dropped Calls?

The utter frustration that you experience when calls drop is beyond imaginable. It may be an important call to a colleague that you may be missing out on or maybe you were catching up with an old buddy of yours. In a recent study by an internet group, dropped calls were the biggest problem that plagued cell phone owners. As per the study, close to 72% of cell phone owners experienced dropped calls occasionally, and 32% experienced dropped calls a few times a week.

Issues With Tower Handoff

A cellular network is a working of interconnected cellular towers that your phone ‘talks’ to by sending data packets. Your phone automatically connects to the nearest tower, allowing you to talk with whoever you want. The communication line between the phone and the cell tower exists as long as it remains the closest one in range. However, the issue comes when you are moving.

If you are cycling, sitting in the backseat of a moving car, walking, etc. then your position is constantly changing. Your phone may sometimes not even switch to a new cell tower in what is called the tower handoff. Your phone may still be linked to a far off tower that has lower reception strength.

This is not only limited to movement but also happens when there is a power outage, extreme traffic load in one or more of the nearest cell tower, glitches in the backend software that is purposely slowing transfer speeds down, etc.

Dead Zones

As the name suggests, these are zones or spots in the cellular map that has no coverage from nearby cell towers. These are more common in rural areas or sparsely populated regions. These zones are also common in hard to reach places for the cell signal such as underground, subways, parking garages and soon. if there are obstacles like large buildings, trees, mountains, hills, then the signals find it difficult to reach you.

Construction Material

The design, layout, and the construction material used in the structure you’re in goes a long way in determining the strength of the cellular signal indoors. Absorbing materials will often reduce the gain of the cellular signal and weaken the signal entirely.
